01Why You Must Ask for Divine Help

Have you ever found yourself drowning in bills, completely overwhelmed by stress, yet stubbornly refusing to ask anyone for a lifeline? We humans have a funny habit of trying to carry the weight of the entire world on our own shoulders, believing that true success only comes from grueling, solitary struggle. Doreen and Grant Virtue completely dismantle this exhausting paradigm right at the outset of their teachings. The fundamental truth they present is that you are surrounded by powerful, benevolent forces—angels of abundance—who are entirely dedicated to helping you achieve peace, prosperity, and joy. However, there is a massive cosmic catch that trips up millions of well-meaning people every single day. The universe operates on the strict universal law of free will. Because of this unbreakable law, your heavenly helpers cannot simply swoop in and fix your bank account or drop a dream job into your lap without your explicit permission. You actually have to invite them into your life. You have to ask for their help. Why is asking so incredibly difficult for us? If we dig deep into our psychological conditioning, we find that many of us carry an immense amount of guilt regarding money and personal desires. We have been socially programmed to believe that asking for financial help, or asking for more than just our basic needs, is inherently selfish. You might catch yourself thinking that there are people in the world starving or facing terrible tragedies, so bothering the angels for a promotion or money to pay off your mortgage is somehow inappropriate or greedy. The authors urge you to completely discard this self-sabotaging notion. The universe is not a giant pizza where taking a slice leaves less for someone else. The divine realm operates on infinite supply. When you ask for abundance, you are not depleting Heaven’s resources; you are simply aligning yourself with the natural flow of prosperity that is meant for everyone. Furthermore, angels do not judge your requests based on human scales of importance. Whether you are asking for world peace or just enough cash to fix your broken car transmission so you can get to work, they hear you with the exact same level of unconditional love. The crucial realization here is that you cannot fulfill your divine life purpose if you are constantly in a state of panic over your survival. If you are exhausted, underfed, and stressed about debt, your beautiful, unique gifts cannot be shared with the world. Therefore, asking for abundance is actually a deeply spiritual act. It is you saying to the universe that you are ready to be fully supported so that you can go out and do the good work you were put on this earth to do. So, how exactly should you ask? The beauty of this process is its absolute simplicity. You do not need to memorize complex ancient chants, meditate on a mountaintop for hours, or perform elaborate rituals. You can ask in whatever way feels most natural and comfortable to you. Some people prefer to write a heartfelt letter to their angels, pouring out their financial fears and explicitly listing the support they need. Writing it out physically moves the chaotic energy of worry from your mind onto the paper, creating space for solutions. Others prefer to speak their requests out loud while driving alone in the car or taking a quiet walk in nature. You can simply say, "Angels, I am struggling with my finances right now, and I am asking for your clear guidance and material support to help me pay these bills and find a new source of income." Even a silent, desperate plea in your mind during a moment of overwhelming anxiety is instantly heard and registered by your spiritual support team. The method of communication matters far less than the sincerity of your heart and your willingness to surrender the problem. When you ask, you are essentially handing over the heavy burden of "how" the problem will be solved to a higher power. Your job is to make the request, clearly and without apology. You must recognize that you are entirely worthy of living a beautiful, comfortable, and abundant life. Let go of the false pride that insists you must do everything the hard way. By opening your mouth and your heart to ask for divine assistance, you turn the key in the lock, opening the door for miracles to begin flowing into your reality.

02Escaping the Trap of Poverty Consciousness

Let us take a brutally honest look at the beliefs about money that have been quietly running in the background of your mind since childhood. If you frequently catch yourself thinking that wealth is inherently corrupting, or that rich people are greedy and unethical, you are currently trapped in what the authors identify as "poverty consciousness." This mindset is perhaps the single greatest barrier to experiencing the abundance that is your divine birthright. Poverty consciousness is not just about having a low bank account balance; it is a pervasive, heavy energy that dictates how you view the world, how you view yourself, and what you believe is possible for your life. It is the deeply ingrained belief that there simply is not enough to go around, that life is a zero-sum game, and that suffering is just a natural, unavoidable part of the human experience. The Virtues explain that these toxic beliefs are rarely our own original thoughts. We inherit them from our parents, absorb them from television shows and movies, and pick them up from societal conditioning. Think about the fairy tales and stories we consume as children. The villains are often wealthy, greedy tycoons, while the heroes are poor, humble, and noble. We are subliminally taught that poverty equals purity, and wealth equals wickedness. As we grow older, we hear phrases like "money does not grow on trees," "filthy rich," or "money is the root of all evil." If your subconscious mind genuinely believes that acquiring wealth will turn you into a bad person, alienate you from your friends, or distance you from God, it will do absolutely everything in its immense power to keep you broke. You will unconsciously sabotage job interviews, make poor investment choices, or suddenly encounter unexpected expenses the moment you start saving a little cash. To break free from this insidious trap, you must consciously transition from poverty consciousness into an "abundance mindset." This requires a radical shift in perspective. You must begin to see money not as a necessary evil, but as a neutral form of energy. Money is simply an amplifier of who you already are. If a selfish person gets a lot of money, they might do selfish things. But if a kind, compassionate, spiritually-minded person—like you—receives a massive influx of wealth, what will happen? You will use that money to care for your family, support ethical businesses, donate to charities, and spread light in the world. The angels actually want good-hearted people to have vast amounts of money because money is a tool for positive change. When you reframe wealth as a resource for healing the world, you suddenly remove the subconscious block that has been keeping it away from you. Another fascinating aspect of poverty consciousness discussed in the book is the concept of past-life vows or ancestral trauma. Even if you do not strictly believe in past lives, the metaphor is incredibly powerful. Many spiritual seekers carry a deep, unexplained aversion to material wealth, almost as if they took a vow of poverty in a different time and place, believing that denying the flesh was the only way to elevate the soul. The authors emphasize that the time for such suffering has passed. We are now in an era where spiritual connection and material comfort are meant to be integrated. You can formally and forcefully release any conscious or unconscious vows of poverty you may be carrying. You can say out loud, "I hearby sever and release all vows of poverty I have ever made across all time and space. I embrace abundance as a tool for divine love." Shifting to an abundance mindset also requires you to rigorously police your daily language and thoughts. How often do you say things like, "I cannot afford that," or "I am always broke," or "My luck is terrible"? The universe is constantly listening to your words and taking them literally. When you declare that you are broke, the angels step back, honoring your free will to experience the reality you are actively speaking into existence. Instead of stating limitations as absolute facts, you must learn to pivot your language. If you see something you want but currently do not have the funds for, instead of saying, "I can't afford it," ask yourself, "How can I afford this?" or state, "The universe is currently organizing the resources for me to have this." By simply changing your self-talk, you stop reaffirming your financial limitations and start opening neurological and energetic pathways to new possibilities. Over time, this conscious rewiring of your brain completely dissolves poverty consciousness, leaving you open, optimistic, and magnetically attractive to new wealth.
