01The Call of the Unknown

Our protagonist, the biologist, is a woman of profound intellect, her life dictated by the relentless pursuit of knowledge. She is haunted by the specter of her husband, who returned from the enigmatic Area X a hollow shell of the man he once was, his vitality sapped, his spirit extinguished, until he finally succumbed to the relentless grip of cancer. His demise left her with an enigma, a puzzle that she felt an irresistible urge to decipher. Area X, a quarantined region shrouded in enigma, is a realm where nature has reasserted its sovereignty. It is a sanctuary of unspoiled wilderness, untouched by the corrosive influence of human civilization, yet it is also a realm of inexplicable occurrences and concealed perils. The previous expeditions have all ended in catastrophe, with the members either vanishing without a trace or returning as fractured remnants of their former selves, their memories of their experiences in Area X erased. The twelfth expedition is composed of four women: the biologist, an anthropologist, a surveyor, and a psychologist who serves as the expedition's commander. Each of them has their own motivations for volunteering for the expedition, but they are united by a common objective: to unravel the enigma of Area X. The team is trained to observe, to gather data, and to avoid contamination. They are briefed about the potential hazards, but nothing could equip them for the realities they would face in Area X. As the team delves deeper into Area X, they stumble upon a peculiar structure, which the biologist dubs the "tower". Within the tower, they discover enigmatic inscriptions on the walls, composed of living organisms. The biologist, driven by her scientific curiosity, decides to scrutinize the inscriptions, unwittingly exposing herself to the unknown. This encounter sets off a chain of events that culminate in the disintegration of the team and the revelation of the true nature of Area X. The biologist's voyage into Area X is not merely a physical expedition, but also a journey into the labyrinth of her own psyche. As she wrestles with the enigmas of Area X, she also confronts her own fears, her guilt over her husband's death, and her yearning for comprehension. Her exploration of Area X evolves into a quest for self-discovery, a search for truth in a world where nothing is as it appears.
