01Break Free from the Epidemic of Average
We live in a world that is completely infected by a silent, highly contagious disease, and that disease is the overwhelming desire to be just like everyone else. From the moment we are born, the people around us subtly train us to aim for the middle of the pack. We are taught to get decent grades, find a secure job with a modest retirement plan, buy a sensible house, and quietly ride out the clock until we pass away. Society champions the concept of settling. We hear phrases like "be realistic," "don't bite off more than you can chew," and "money cannot buy happiness" on a daily basis. These phrases sound like harmless pieces of conventional wisdom, but Grant Cardone warns us that they are actually toxic ideologies designed to keep you small. Average is a failing formula in today’s highly competitive, rapidly changing world, and accepting it is the most dangerous risk you can possibly take. To truly understand the danger of this epidemic, we have to look back at the author's own life story. When Grant was twenty-five years old, he emerged from a rehabilitation center after struggling with severe drug addiction. The professional counselors looked at him, analyzed his intense, addictive personality, and gave him what they thought was the best possible advice. They told him to take it easy, avoid stress, blend into the background, and never aim too high because the disappointment of failure would trigger a relapse. They diagnosed his extreme personality as a fatal flaw. However, Grant soon realized that living a quiet, low-stress, average life was exactly what made him miserable in the first place. He recognized that his intense, all-consuming energy was not the problem; the problem was the vehicle he was pouring that energy into. He decided to completely reject the advice of the experts and channel his addictive personality into his career, his personal growth, and his financial success. The middle-class mindset is a trap because it creates a false sense of security. When you aim for average, you leave yourself entirely vulnerable to the slightest economic downturn, a sudden medical emergency, or an unexpected layoff. Average savings will not protect you during a massive recession. An average work ethic will not keep you off the chopping block when a company decides to downsize. We see this play out in everyday life constantly. Think about the countless people who clock into a job they despise every Monday, silently endure the week, and then numb themselves on the weekend with endless hours of television or mindless scrolling on social media. They have accepted a life of quiet desperation because they believe that wanting more is greedy or unrealistic. They have surrendered to the epidemic. Breaking free from this mindset requires a complete ideological shift. You have to start viewing the concept of "normal" with deep suspicion. If the normal person is broke, stressed, unhappy, and unfulfilled, why on earth would you want to take advice from them or emulate their lifestyle? You must actively decide to deny average in every single area of your life. This means refusing to accept a mediocre marriage, refusing to accept average health, and absolutely refusing to accept an average income. Here are a few clear indicators that you might be infected by the epidemic of average: You frequently use the word "enough" when talking about your finances or your achievements. You find yourself complaining about the economy, the government, or your boss instead of taking personal responsibility. You look forward to Friday more than any other day of the week because you want to escape your reality. You view people who achieve massive success with suspicion or jealousy rather than curiosity and admiration. To cure yourself of this disease, you must stop listening to the masses. The middle class operates on the principle of conservation—saving energy, saving pennies, and avoiding risk. The obsessed operate on the principle of expansion—creating energy, multiplying wealth, and taking massive, calculated risks. You have to draw a hard line in the sand and declare that you will no longer participate in the collective race to the bottom. It requires courage to stand up and say that you want it all, but that declaration is the very first step toward a life of extraordinary achievement. Once you strip away the desire to fit in, you clear the runway to finally launch into your true potential.
02Why Your Obsession is Actually a Superpower
The very word obsession has been dragged through the mud by modern psychology, but it is actually the core ingredient of every monumental human achievement in history. If you look up the word in a standard dictionary, you will find negative associations. It is often defined as a persistent, disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling. Society treats it like a mental illness that needs to be medicated, suppressed, or therapy-ed out of existence. However, if you take a close look at any person who has ever changed the world, built a massive empire, or broken a significant record, you will find a deeply obsessed individual. Obsession is not a defect; it is a profound gift. It is the raw, unbridled fuel that allows human beings to push past the boundaries of what is considered possible. Let us look at how humans operate in their purest, most natural state. Children are the perfect example of healthy, uninhibited obsession. When a toddler is learning how to walk, they are entirely consumed by the task. They fall down hundreds of times, they hit their heads, they get frustrated, but they never simply decide to give up and crawl for the rest of their lives. They are obsessed with mastering the mechanics of walking. When a young child discovers a new toy or a new subject, they ask "why" a thousand times a day. They become fixated. What happens to this beautiful, natural drive? We socialize it out of them. We put them in classrooms and tell them to sit still, be quiet, stop asking so many questions, and focus only on what is strictly required to pass a standardized test. We systematically drain the obsession out of our youth until they become compliant, average adults. To reclaim your power, you must fundamentally redefine what obsession means to you. Think about the most successful icons of our time. Steve Jobs was famously obsessed with the exact curvature of the corners on Apple products, going so far as to demand that the internal circuit boards—which the customer would never even see—be aesthetically perfect. Michael Jordan possessed a legendary, almost terrifying obsession with winning that pushed him to completely dominate the game of basketball. Elon Musk is so obsessed with making humanity a multi-planetary species that he regularly sleeps on the factory floor to ensure production goals are met. When people reach this level of success, society suddenly changes its tune. The masses call them "visionaries" and "geniuses." But make no mistake, when these icons were just starting out, before the money and the fame, ordinary people called them crazy, unbalanced, and sick. You must realize that the label of obsession is only used as an insult by people who have given up on their own dreams. When you embrace your obsession, you tap into an infinite source of energy. Average people rely on fleeting motivation, a good cup of coffee, or an inspirational quote to get them through the day. Obsessed people do not need alarm clocks because their purpose wakes them up. They do not need to read a motivational poster because the fire burning inside their chest is entirely self-sustaining. Embracing this superpower means you must stop apologizing for being heavily invested in your goals. Have you ever felt embarrassed because you wanted to work on a weekend while your friends were going out to a bar? Have you ever downplayed your financial targets because you did not want to make your family members feel uncomfortable? This behavior is a betrayal of your gift. From now on, when someone looks at you and says, "You work too much, you are obsessed," your only response should be a polite and enthusiastic, "Thank you." Your obsession is the ultimate filter for your life. When you become completely fixated on a massive goal, trivial distractions simply disappear. You no longer care about office gossip, meaningless television shows, or petty arguments. Your mind becomes a laser beam focused entirely on creation and expansion. You will start to view every interaction, every dollar, and every minute as a resource to fuel your ultimate vision. This level of intensity is not something to be feared; it is something to be cultivated, protected, and unleashed upon the world. The moment you give yourself permission to be completely, unapologetically obsessed with your future, you unlock a level of potential that you never even knew you possessed.
