His new employer was Laurens Bancroft, a Methuselah, one of the elite few who had amassed enough wealth to cheat death itself. Bancroft lived in a world far removed from the grimy streets of Bay City, in a mansion that towered above the city, a testament to his wealth and power. Bancroft's death was a mystery that had stumped the city's police. His body was found in his home, his stack - a small device implanted at the base of the skull that housed his consciousness - destroyed. The police had ruled it a suicide, but Bancroft, who had a backup of his consciousness, refused to believe that he would take his own life. He had hired Kovacs to find the truth, offering him a chance at a new life in return for his services. As Kovacs delved deeper into the investigation, he found himself navigating the treacherous underbelly of Bay City. He had to contend with corrupt cops, ruthless assassins, and Bancroft's own scheming family. All the while, he grappled with the disorientation of being in a new body, and the ghosts of his past that refused to stay buried. In this city of neon and shadows, Kovacs was a stranger in a strange land, a pawn in a game of power and deceit. But he was determined to uncover the truth, no matter the cost.
