In the heart of Barcelona, Victor Dalmau and Roser Bruguera, each engrossed in their respective worlds of medicine and music, found their lives abruptly upended by the eruption of the Spanish Civil War. Victor, a fervent medical student, was compelled to abandon his textbooks and lectures as the brutalities of war demanded his immediate attention. He found himself in the midst of chaos, working in makeshift hospitals, tending to the wounded and dying, his dreams of a tranquil life as a doctor shattered like glass under a sledgehammer. Roser, a gifted pianist, was not spared from the harsh realities of war either. The music school that had been her sanctuary was abruptly closed, and her mentor and guardian, Guillem, Victor's brother, was claimed by the merciless war. The loss of Guillem was a blow that shook Victor and Roser to their cores, for he had been a beacon of light in their lives. As the war intensified, Victor and Roser found themselves uprooted from their home in Barcelona. They embarked on a treacherous journey across the Pyrenees to France, joining the river of refugees seeking safety. Despite the adversities they encountered, their bond deepened, their shared experiences forging a connection that provided solace in the midst of turmoil. In France, they were met with further challenges. The refugee camps were bursting at the seams, and the conditions were deplorable. Victor, however, continued to wield his medical skills like a weapon against despair, providing aid to those around him. Roser, on the other hand, sought refuge in her music, her fingers dancing on the keys of her beloved piano whenever she could find a moment of peace. Their lives took another dramatic turn when they were presented with an opportunity to board the Winnipeg, a ship chartered by the renowned Chilean poet Pablo Neruda to transport Spanish refugees to Chile. With no other viable options for a secure future, they grasped the opportunity with both hands, setting sail for a new life in a land far removed from their own. Their journey was not just across the vast ocean, but also a voyage towards hope, resilience, and an uncertain future.
