01The Early Years: A Star in the Making

Born into a hardworking Italian-American family in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Peter Criss was the oldest of five children. His parents, Joseph and Loretta Criscuola, instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance, which would later play a significant role in his musical journey. The vibrant musical culture of his neighborhood, filled with the sounds of jazz, blues, and rock 'n' roll, sparked his interest in music at a young age. In his early teens, Peter's dedication to his craft began to pay off. After saving money from odd jobs to buy his first real drum set, he started practicing relentlessly in his family's basement. His hard work and talent did not go unnoticed, and at the age of 16, he was invited to join a local band, The Barracudas. This first taste of performing live solidified his desire to make music his life's work. Peter's musical style was shaped by a diverse range of influences. From jazz greats like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich to rock 'n' roll pioneers like Elvis Presley and The Beatles, he absorbed a wide array of musical styles. This eclectic mix of influences led to the development of his unique drumming style, which combined the technical precision of jazz with the raw energy of rock 'n' roll. In 1964, Peter formed his first serious band, Chelsea, with his childhood friend, Stan Penridge. While the band enjoyed moderate success in the local music scene, it was their collaboration that would later lead to the creation of some of KISS's biggest hits. This period was crucial in the formation of Peter's musical identity, as he began to experiment with songwriting and develop his signature vocal style. The early years of Peter Criss's life were instrumental in shaping the musician he would become.
