In the confines of 'Room', a world no larger than a garden shed, Jack and Ma have woven a life of simple rhythms and rituals. Their days are punctuated by modest meals, physical exertion, and the weaving of tales that fuel Jack's imagination. His understanding of existence is sculpted by the narrow confines of his environment and the narratives spun by his Ma. He perceives the objects within Room as the only tangible reality, while the images flickering on their tiny television screen are figments of fantasy. Ma, however, is acutely conscious of their grim existence. She was snatched from her life by Old Nick when she was barely more than a child herself, and has since been imprisoned in his garden shed, a space they've come to call 'Room'. In this claustrophobic world, she has given birth to Jack, and has strived to construct an illusion of normalcy for him. Old Nick, their captor, haunts their nights, bringing with him provisions and necessities. Ma has masterfully shielded Jack from the harsh truth of their predicament, making him retreat into the wardrobe whenever Old Nick makes his nocturnal visits. She has painted a universe for Jack where Old Nick is a distant, almost mythical entity, and Room is the entirety of their cosmos. Despite the chilling circumstances, Ma has managed to instill in Jack a sense of awe and inquisitiveness. He is captivated by the limited world he knows, and his innocence and boundless imagination transform Room into a bearable sanctuary for them both. Yet, beneath the surface of their daily routine, Ma is ceaselessly plotting and dreaming of liberation, yearning to offer Jack a shot at a life beyond the four walls of Room.
