Or when the damage to our planet becomes irreversible? The environmental and health impacts of this system are alarming. Synthetic fertilizers and pesticides may boost crop yields in the short term, but they also degrade the soil, pollute our waterways, and kill off beneficial insects and other wildlife. And it's not just the environment that suffers. These chemicals can also end up in our food and water, contributing to a range of health problems from allergies and asthma to cancer and neurological disorders. Take the case of Punjab, India's "breadbasket," where industrial agriculture was introduced in the 1960s as part of the Green Revolution. Today, the region is facing an epidemic of cancer, believed to be linked to the heavy use of pesticides. The soil is depleted, the water table is falling, and the once-diverse farming landscape is now a monoculture of wheat and rice. But the impacts of industrial agriculture aren't limited to the environment and health. There are also social and economic implications.
