Predicting exactly what millions of different consumers will want to buy, when they will want to buy it, and in what quantities, is arguably the most difficult challenge in modern commerce. Human behavior is notoriously fickle, influenced by everything from sudden weather changes to viral social media trends. However, supply chains cannot operate on guesswork; they require concrete numbers to function. Coyle and Langley dedicate significant attention to the concept of demand management, explaining that anticipating consumer needs is the critical starting point that triggers every subsequent action in the supply chain network. If a company gets its demand forecast wrong, the resulting cascade of errors will either leave warehouses overflowing with unsold goods or leave store shelves completely empty, both of which are incredibly costly mistakes.
