Her captor was an enormous figure, a giant, who introduced himself as the Big Friendly Giant, or BFG for short. Unlike the monstrous giants of fairy tales, the BFG was a gentle soul, a vegetarian who subsisted on a diet of snozzcumbers and frobscottle, rather than human flesh. His loneliness was palpable, and he whisked Sophie away to his dwelling in the remote Giant Country, a land populated by his kind. Sophie's initial terror gradually subsided as she realized that the BFG posed no threat to her. He confessed that he had taken her out of fear that she would reveal his existence to others, thereby endangering his life. The BFG was no ordinary giant; he had a unique occupation.
