Her tranquil existence in her close-knit community is shattered when she stumbles upon a horrifying sight: her son Uche, lifeless, his life snuffed out by her own husband, Jija. The revelation of Uche's latent orogene abilities had driven Jija to commit this unthinkable act. Overwhelmed by fear and confusion, Jija has vanished, taking with him their daughter Nassun, another concealed orogene. Simultaneously, the world spirals into chaos as a colossal rift cleaves through the continent, its epicenter the capital city, Yumenes. This cataclysm, known as the Fifth Season, unleashes a domino effect of earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions, casting a shroud of ash over the sky and plunging the world into a relentless, bitter winter. The Fifth Season is a recurring nightmare in the Stillness, recurring every few centuries and persisting for years, sometimes decades. The society has devised a survival manual, the "stonelore," providing guidelines to endure these catastrophic periods. Driven by a mother's fury and despair, Essun embarks on a perilous journey across the disintegrating continent to retrieve her daughter. Her path crosses with a motley group of survivors, including fellow orogenes, all either striving to reach the equator's supposed safety or merely struggling to survive amidst the rapidly mutating landscape. Her journey is fraught with danger, not only from the environmental threats but also from the desperate and violent individuals the disaster has spawned. As she traverses the crumbling land, Essun's mind wanders back to her past, to her harsh training at the Fulcrum, a ruthless institution that harnesses and controls orogenes to maintain the continent's stability. She remembers her first love, Alabaster, a formidable orogene who was coerced into becoming her mate by the Fulcrum. Alabaster, revealed to be the architect of the rift, aids Essun in comprehending the true essence of orogeny and the oppressive system they are ensnared in. The narrative weaves a complex pattern of survival, power, and the human ability to adapt in the face of unimaginable hardship. It delves into themes of systemic oppression, xenophobia, and the lengths a mother will traverse to safeguard her child.
