Genly Ai, an envoy from the Ekumen, a harmonious alliance of eighty-three worlds, finds himself on the frost-ridden planet of Gethen, also known as Winter. His mission is to persuade the Gethenians to join the Ekumen, a peaceful federation that fosters mutual understanding and collaboration among its constituents. However, the task is far more daunting than he initially anticipated. Genly spends two grueling years on Gethen, attempting to comprehend the complexities of its society. The Gethenians are ambisexual, possessing no permanent gender. During their monthly sexual cycle, known as "kemmer", they can transition into either male or female. This unique biological trait has a profound influence on their society, eradicating gender roles and fostering a culture where individuals are esteemed for their talents and capabilities, rather than their gender. The political terrain of Gethen further complicates Genly's mission. The planet is fragmented into several nations, each with its distinct government and traditions. The two most influential nations are Karhide and Orgoreyn. Karhide is a monarchy governed by an unstable king, while Orgoreyn is a bureaucratic state managed by a council of thirty-three. Genly initially attempts to negotiate with the king of Karhide, but his efforts are undermined by the king's prime minister, who perceives the Ekumen as a menace to Karhide's autonomy. Genly then shifts his focus to Orgoreyn, hoping to find a more receptive audience. However, he soon finds himself ensnared in a labyrinth of political machinations. He is apprehended and dispatched to a labor camp in the frigid north, where he endures harsh conditions and brutal treatment. Despite these adversities, Genly remains resolute in his mission to integrate Gethen into the Ekumen. His experiences on the planet compel him to reassess his preconceived notions about gender and society, and he learns to perceive the Gethenians not as extraterrestrials, but as fellow sentient beings.
