In the heart of a bustling country fair, amidst the cacophony of vendors hawking their wares and the laughter of children, Michael Henchard, a man of robust build and fiery temperament, found himself in the throes of inebriation. Thus, his family was whisked away by the sailor, leaving Henchard alone in the crowd, his laughter echoing hollowly in the evening air. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Henchard, Susan and Elizabeth-Jane were alive. They were leading a modest life in another town, their past a distant memory.
