During his tenure at Princeton, Changez crosses paths with Erica, a classmate whose beauty is only surpassed by her wealth. Despite Erica's emotional unavailability, a consequence of her unresolved feelings for her late childhood love, Chris, Changez finds himself irresistibly drawn to her. He falls profoundly in love with Erica, and their relationship becomes a cornerstone of his American life. However, the tragic events of 9/11 cast a long, dark shadow over Changez's life.
