Dr. Tim Riggs, a man of medicine and a scoutmaster by calling, led his troop of five boys - Ephraim, Kent, Max, Newt, and Shelley - to their yearly wilderness retreat on the secluded Falstaff Island. Despite Tim's extensive medical knowledge, he found himself unable to diagnose the stranger's affliction. The arrival of the stranger marked a turning point in the camp's atmosphere.
